Ian Trusheim

Ian Trusheim:

Bass/Guitar

Growing up in Newark, DE Ian Trusheim was born into a musical family.  He played piano, euphonium, tuba, bass guitar and performed with the Delaware All-State band.  Although music was temporarily placed on the “back burner” while Ian focused on playing team sports during his adolescence, it was not in vain.  This experience allowed Ian to develop his ability to adapt to various group dynamics, which formed the foundation for future musical collaborations.  Upon entering Washington College, Ian fully realized the beauty and power of music, while playing the bass and piano daily and developing his understanding of music theory.  During that time, Ian focused on performance and composition, playing the tuba in the concert band, bass for the jazz big band, jazz combo and Afro-Cuban ensemble.  Ian graduated from Washington College in 2007, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music.

Over the last decade, Ian has recorded albums, taught lessons, composed and played with a variety of musicians performing everything from funk, fusion, R&B, jazz and hip hop to country, bluegrass, musicals, pop, gospel, blues, punk, and of course ROCK&ROLL!  Ian currently provides bass and guitar lessons, in addition to coaching bands in the Kidz Rock program at The Music Workshop in Baltimore.  When he’s not teaching, Ian is a freelance musician, which allows him the privilege of being involved with many versatile projects throughout the Delmarva area, including bassist at Living Word Ministries and 1/3 of the popular Baltimore funk/fusion trio CTW.  He has studied with ethnomusicologist Dr. Ken Schweitzer, Jesse Murphy (John Scofield, Brazilian Girls); and, he currently studies with Shawn Qaissaunee (Berklee College of Music alumnus, former student of Pat Martino).  Previously Ian has shared the stage with Mint Condition and The Roots; these days he has the pleasure and honor of performing with members of Parliament Funkadelic’s extended family.

Respecting the unique qualities in all people, Ian tailors his lessons to meet the individual needs and areas of interest for each of his students.  He strives to provide them with a solid foundation of musical principles through knowledge of music theory, reading music, and proper technique; however, although these skills are necessary, they do not begin to capture the full scope of the musical experience for Ian.  He shares integral concepts with his students, learned from Victor Wooten’s “The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music,” emphasizing that music theory or “notes” is only one element of music.  Ian feels it is essential to acknowledge the other defining elements of music such as articulation, phrasing, dynamics, rhythm, tone, space, listening and emotion.  Music is alive!!!
